Robotics Startup Generalist Hits $3B Valuation, Sources Say

Robotics startup Generalist has reached a $3 billion valuation following a new funding round led by 8VC, according to two individuals familiar with the deal.
Regulatory filings indicate the latest injection of capital amounts to nearly $200 million. This extends a previously announced $400 million Series B round, led by Radical Ventures in June at a $2 billion valuation, bringing the total funding for this round to $600 million.
Representatives for Generalist and 8VC did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Established in 2024 by ex-Google DeepMind researchers Pete Florence and Andy Zeng, alongside former Boston Dynamics engineer Andrew Barry, Generalist has secured early support from 8VC, Radical Ventures, Nvidia, Union Square Ventures, Bezos Expeditions, and AI expert Fei-Fei Li.
The company has maintained a low profile, operating with minimal public exposure until recently.
Generalist is building an AI foundation model designed to operate across diverse robotic platforms. The company states its latest Gen 1.5 model allows robots to learn new tasks from video demonstrations as brief as 3 to 12 seconds.
According to one source, the startup is collaborating with a select group of clients, using their feedback to refine the model for specific applications.
Generalist faces competition in the race to create a universal robotic brain. Notable rivals include Physical Intelligence, reportedly valued at $11 billion, SoftBank-backed Skild AI at $14 billion, and Genesis AI, which was in discussions last month to raise funds at a $3 billion valuation.
This surge in investment signals investor confidence that robotics is approaching a “ChatGPT moment,” where robots can handle general tasks without explicit training for each. However, some venture capitalists caution that because robots cannot be trained on the vast datasets available to large language models, a truly general robotics model may still be years away.
