HomePerplexity's Personal Computer App Launches for Mac Users
Perplexity's Personal Computer, its response to OpenClaw and similar local AI agents, is now accessible to all Mac users through its desktop application, the company announced on Thursday.
To recap, Personal Computer builds upon Perplexity's general-purpose, multi-model digital assistant known as Perplexity Computer. "Personal Computer" is specifically engineered to bring these capabilities directly to your own device. It achieves this by granting AI agents access to local files, applications, connectors, and the web, enabling them to manage an individual user's personal, multi-step workflows.
Or, as the company frames it, Personal Computer "moves Computer from a cloud-only environment onto the device where the majority of your actual work already happens."

The objective is to tap into the rising demand for local AI agents, a trend popularized by OpenClaw, which can execute tasks on a user's behalf. However, while OpenClaw introduced several security vulnerabilities due to its elevated permissions, solutions like Personal Computer aim to provide a safer, AI-enhanced computing environment for users. (At least, that is the stated goal.)
Perplexity's Personal Computer was initially unveiled last month but was restricted to Perplexity Max subscribers and involved a waitlist. Today, the company states that any Mac user can now try the software as part of its new Perplexity Mac app. (While anyone can download the new app, using Personal Computer requires a Pro or Max subscription.)
At launch, the software can interact with your local files, native Mac applications, and operate on the web. It can also orchestrate tools, manage files, utilize over 400 connectors, and leverage your personal context—all within a secure development environment on Perplexity's servers.
When paired with Perplexity's AI-powered Comet web browser, it can operate web-based tools without requiring direct connectors.

Designed to run autonomous agents on an always-on device like a Mac Mini, Personal Computer can even be accessed remotely from your iPhone, allowing you to initiate tasks or approve requests from your mobile device.
Perplexity suggests the tool is suitable for various types of work, such as handling spreadsheets, documents, and projects involving diverse materials. Because it can work across different applications, agents could, for example, compare two files from separate apps or pull notes from one application to draft content in another.
Following this general release, Perplexity states its older Mac app will be phased out in the coming weeks so the team can concentrate development on the Personal Computer application.
The new Mac app is currently available only as a direct download and is not listed on the Mac App Store.
