OpenAI Unveils Advertising Integration in Its Free ChatGPT Version, Marking End of Original Pure Model Era

OpenAI, which previously emphasized a completely ad-free user experience, has now relented under the pressure to incorporate commercial elements. This Sunday, a company spokesperson confirmed that the firm intends to introduce advertisements for users of the free version of ChatGPT and the Go edition in the United States within the coming weeks. This decision marks the initiation of a broader monetization strategy for the world’s most popular AI chat application.
It has been reported that Criteo, a leading advertising technology company, has been chosen as one of the initial partners involved in testing ads for ChatGPT. The company is currently reaching out to potential advertisers, requiring them to allocate an initial advertising budget ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 per client, which is equivalent to roughly 345,000 to 690,000 RMB.
Insufficient Income? A Monetization Strategy Forced by Expensive Computing Power
The recent move toward monetization by OpenAI stems from mounting financial pressures within the generative AI sector. As the number of ChatGPT users around the globe continues to rise, the costs associated with maintaining the computing infrastructure needed to support its operations—particularly GPU usage and energy consumption—are increasing sharply. To sustain growth in such a competitive industry, OpenAI must explore alternative revenue streams beyond its subscription-based Plus membership.
Advertising Formats: Deep Integration of Text and Visual Materials
Unlike conventional sidebar ads found on search engines, OpenAI proposes that advertisers provide multiple versions of their text and visual content to increase the frequency at which their messages appear. This approach means that future ChatGPT advertisements are likely to be seamlessly integrated into the conversation flow in a more interactive manner, rather than appearing as simple banner ads.
Although OpenAI initially adopted a cautious stance toward adding ads, the increasing competition from companies such as Anthropic and the substantial investment required for research and development have made offering ad-supported free services almost unavoidable. For users, this could mean having to accept certain costs in exchange for access to cutting-edge AI technologies.
With the pilot launch set to take place in the U.S. market, it is likely that this advertising system will be expanded globally in the future. As “AI assistants” begin to incorporate marketing functions, OpenAI’s business model will evolve from being solely a tool provider to a more complex media platform.
