OpenAI Introduces ChatGPT for Teens to Boost Safety and Educational Support for Young Users
OpenAI has recently rolled out ChatGPT for Teens, incorporating age-appropriate safeguards and learning guidance tools designed to address the concerns surrounding AI chatbots. These features are aimed at tackling issues such as those related to adolescent mental health and academic dishonesty.
Within the education context, ChatGPT for Teens includes a “Learning Mode” that assists teenagers in comprehending study materials through guided questions and step-by-step instructions. If the system detects signs that a user is attempting to use AI to complete homework, it will display a reminder encouraging them to switch to Learning Mode instead. The platform also offers quiz functions and visual learning options, while allowing parents or guardians to establish default settings for activating Learning Mode.

Regarding safety, ChatGPT for Teens operates with pre-set age-appropriate protections to minimize exposure to harmful or inappropriate content. These safeguards are developed in accordance with OpenAI’s “Under 18 Users Policy” and take into account insights from developmental science and expert recommendations. Parents can further manage settings using family control tools, receive safety alerts, and set designated quiet times.
This update follows growing discussions about AI safety. Since its launch at the end of 2022, ChatGPT has accumulated 900 million weekly users. OpenAI has also announced a partnership with CodeAI to help teens understand the fundamentals of AI as well as how to critically evaluate and utilize it. Additionally, the company has already introduced a ChatGPT Teacher Edition to provide schools with institutional access to AI tools along with corresponding support services.
