Nvidia Leases Data Centers, Anthropic Pays $3.5 Billion

A September 1 Wall Street Journal report reveals that AI firm Anthropic has entered a $35 billion (approx. RMB 235.752 billion) cloud computing deal with provider Lambda. This agreement features a unique subletting structure: the computing power Anthropic receives is sourced from data center resources previously reserved by NVIDIA.
Unveiling NVIDIA's "Second Landlord" Strategy
The facilities in question are situated in Nueces County, Texas, and are being built by Hut 8, a Bitcoin mining and data center development company. Weeks prior, NVIDIA had already secured a lease on this data center through an agreement with Hut 8.
In this setup, Lambda utilizes the data center currently under development by Hut 8, installing chips bought from NVIDIA to offer cloud services to Anthropic. This allows Lambda to avoid upfront data center site costs, though the fees Lambda pays to NVIDIA remain undisclosed.
This transaction marks another instance of NVIDIA facilitating Anthropic's access to computing resources. Earlier this year, Anthropic encountered supply constraints as its products gained traction, prompting aggressive cloud computing contracts. Just this month, Anthropic finalized a $45 billion (approx. RMB 303.109 billion) computing lease with Nscale, another NVIDIA-backed cloud vendor.
Competitive and Regulatory Uncertainties
Notably, Hut 8 is developing additional data centers for Anthropic, which will feature Google's TPUs to compete with NVIDIA chips. Google has provided financial backing to assist Hut 8 in securing funding. In July, Hut 8 announced that a "high-investment-grade company" had signed a 15-year lease for the entire 700-megawatt Texas campus, without disclosing the tenant's identity.
