The NVIDIA Agent Toolkit addresses a critical challenge for enterprises: deploying AI agents effectively while maintaining control over data, systems, and compliance.
Announced at GTC 2026 in San Jose on March 16, this open-source software stack empowers enterprises and developers to build autonomous AI agents. These agents can independently perceive, reason, and act across internal systems, reducing the need for constant human oversight.
The launch is timely. The industry has moved beyond pilot projects, and the primary barrier to widespread adoption is now trust. Implementing reliable guardrails for agents operating within enterprise systems has been a significant scaling challenge.
OpenShell and the Safety Challenge
The toolkit's core component is NVIDIA OpenShell, an open-source runtime that enforces policy-based security, network, and privacy controls for autonomous agents. NVIDIA refers to individual agents as "claws," with OpenShell serving as the essential governance layer.
Jensen Huang emphasized the importance at GTC: "Claude Code and OpenClaw have catalyzed an inflection point, extending AI from generation and reasoning into action. Employees will be empowered by teams of frontier, specialized, and custom-built agents they deploy and manage."
This vision goes beyond a single AI assistant to a coordinated workforce of specialized agents, each managing specific domains. OpenShell provides the infrastructure layer intended to make this scalable and secure for IT departments.
NVIDIA is collaborating with Cisco, CrowdStrike, Google, Microsoft Security, and TrendAI to integrate OpenShell compatibility into their security tools, positioning it as foundational infrastructure rather than a standalone product.
The Research and Cost Advantage
The toolkit also includes NVIDIA AI-Q, an agentic search framework built with LangChain. Its hybrid architecture uses frontier models for orchestration while leveraging NVIDIA's open Nemotron models for intensive research tasks. NVIDIA reports this approach can reduce query costs by over 50% while achieving top-tier accuracy on benchmarks like DeepResearch Bench and DeepResearch Bench II.
This cost efficiency is crucial for enterprises scaling AI initiatives, where pilot-stage pricing models often become unsustainable.
Early Adopters and Partners
GTC revealed an extensive partner list. Companies including Adobe, Atlassian, SAP, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Siemens, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Red Hat, Box, Cadence, Cohesity, Dassault Systèmes, IQVIA, and Synopsys are advancing enterprise AI agents using the NVIDIA Agent Toolkit.
Notable implementations include Salesforce's reference architecture using Slack as an orchestration layer for Agentforce agents, powered by NVIDIA infrastructure. Atlassian is integrating the toolkit into its Rovo AI strategy across Jira and Confluence. ServiceNow's "Autonomous Workforce of AI Specialists" is built on the toolkit and NVIDIA AI-Q.
Siemens launched the Fuse EDA AI Agent, which uses NVIDIA Nemotron to autonomously orchestrate workflows across its electronic design automation portfolio.
IQVIA's deployment offers a tangible data point, with over 150 agents already active across internal teams and client environments, including 19 of the top 20 pharmaceutical companies.
The Strategic Shift
NVIDIA is strategically positioning itself not only as the hardware backbone of AI but also as the essential software infrastructure for enterprise agent deployment. The Agent Toolkit, OpenShell, Nemotron models, and AI-Q form a comprehensive stack designed to underpin a vast ecosystem of enterprise software.
The success of this strategy hinges on the pace at which enterprises transition from agent experimentation to full-scale operations. The toolkit is available now on build.nvidia.com, with support across AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
