Midjourney Expands Beyond Artistic Creations to Enter Healthcare Sector with New Full-Body Ultrasound Scanner
The frontiers of innovation in artificial intelligence are evolving at a rapid pace. Best known for its groundbreaking image generation capabilities, Midjourney has recently announced its official entry into the medical imaging sector by introducing its first hardware product: a full-body scanner that leverages ultrasound technology. This strategic move represents the company’s effort to expand its AI computing capabilities beyond simple image creation to enable precise analysis of human anatomy.
The scanner, dubbed the “Midjourney Scanner,” features a highly advanced design. It utilizes a ring-shaped sensor array and, through close collaboration with ultrasound technology provider Butterfly Network , incorporates 40 imaging modules. Its operation principle is similar to echolocation — users simply need to stand in a shallow pool while the device moves slowly over their body, sending out and receiving echo signals via thousands of transducers. According to the company, a complete full-body scan takes just 60 seconds, producing high-precision three-dimensional cross-sectional images that detail muscle, fat, bone structure, and certain internal organs.

Regarding the potential applications of this device, CEO David Holz expressed strong optimism. He believes that this non-ionizing, non-magnetic scanning method could make medical imaging as accessible as routine health checkups, and he envisions users routinely scanning their bodies to track changes resulting from diet and exercise habits. To bring this vision to life, Midjourney plans to open an integrated facility in San Francisco’s Union Square that will combine scanning services with fitness and spa options, with opening expected by the end of 2027.
From a technical standpoint, the scanner’s backend computing power reaches up to 2 PFLOPS. However, it remains unclear whether this system is closely linked to Midjourney’s original AI image generation models. Many experts view it as part of the company’s strategy to make use of idle computing resources and explore new areas for growth.
Despite these advances, entering the medical field comes with its own set of challenges. Midjourney currently emphasizes that the scanner is designed to generate “body composition maps” rather than providing clinical diagnoses, thereby avoiding the complex regulatory requirements associated with medical devices. Nevertheless, if the scan results are to be used officially for disease diagnosis, they will still need to undergo rigorous FDA approval. Holz acknowledged that this approach is still in its early stages, and the company is working to refine data management practices and further develop related technologies and clinical workflows. By transitioning from a creative tool to a medical imaging solution, Midjourney’s cross-industry experiment may pave the way for new approaches in personal health management.
