Microsoft Edge Opens On-Device AI Models to Web Applications

Web developers will soon be able to leverage on-device AI in Microsoft's Edge browser with new APIs providing access to the company's Phi-4-mini model, announced at today's Build conference. Microsoft confirms the APIs will be cross-platform, enabling functionality in Edge for macOS as well.
The 3.8-billion-parameter Phi-4-mini, Microsoft's latest compact on-device model released in February alongside the larger Phi-4, will enable developers to integrate prompt boxes and writing assistance features for text generation, summarization, and editing. Microsoft plans to introduce a text translation API within the coming months.
These experimental APIs are being proposed as potential web standards and are designed to work with multiple AI models beyond Microsoft's own. Developers can begin testing them immediately through Edge's Canary and Dev channels.
Google provides comparable APIs for Chrome, allowing developers to utilize built-in models for text translation, prompt boxes for text and image generation, and automated calendar event creation from webpage content.
