Microsoft has assured businesses and startups using Anthropic's Claude AI through its platforms that the model will not be pulled from their access. This confirmation, provided to TechCrunch and other outlets, makes Microsoft the first major tech firm to guarantee the continued availability of Anthropic's models to its customers, despite an escalating dispute between the AI company and the U.S. Department of Defense.
The Defense Department labeled Anthropic a supply chain risk after the AI startup declined to provide unrestricted access to its technology for applications it deemed unsafe, such as mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapon systems. This designation, typically applied to foreign adversaries, prohibits the Pentagon from using Anthropic's products and requires its contractors to certify they do not use the company's models. Anthropic has pledged to challenge the ruling in court.
Microsoft, which provides a wide range of products from Office to cloud services for numerous federal agencies including the Defense Department, stated it will continue offering Anthropic's models within its own products and to its customer base. A company spokesperson explained, "Our legal team has reviewed the designation and determined that Anthropic products, including Claude, can remain available to our customers—excluding the Department of Defense—through platforms like M365, GitHub, and Microsoft's AI Foundry. We can also continue collaborating with Anthropic on projects unrelated to defense." CNBC was first to report this statement.
This position aligns with the statement from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who vowed to contest the designation. He clarified, "For our customers, it clearly applies only to the use of Claude as a direct component of contracts with the Department of Defense, not to all uses of Claude by customers who hold such contracts." Amodei added, "Even for Defense Department contractors, the supply chain risk designation does not—and cannot—restrict uses of Claude or business relationships with Anthropic that are unrelated to their specific defense contracts."
Meanwhile, Claude's consumer growth has continued to surge following Anthropic's decision not to comply with the Defense Department's demands.
