Microsoft Build Unveils Self-Developed MAI Models With 35 Billion Parameters

During the recently held Build2026 Developer Conference, Microsoft revealed several in-house AI models. The debut of its first advanced reasoning model, MAI-Thinking-1 , represents a significant milestone in Microsoft’s journey toward independent large model development and the creation of a comprehensive AI ecosystem for all use cases.
With 35 billion active parameters, MAI-Thinking-1 is considered a "medium-sized model" yet has achieved industry-leading results on key software engineering benchmarks. Microsoft stressed that the model was trained from scratch using clean data, and explicitly stated that no distilled data from third-party models was used. In an industry where data distillation is common, this underscores Microsoft's unwavering dedication to technical independence and data integrity.
Beyond the flagship reasoning model, Microsoft extended the MAI family with models for multimodal and specialized vertical applications. In image and voice domains, MAI-Image2.5, which enables text-to-image generation and image editing, was launched alongside its Flash version; MAI-Transcribe-1.5 offers ultra-fast transcription, reaching speeds five times faster than competitors; and MAI-Voice-2, now supporting 15 additional languages (with a Flash version coming soon), greatly expands the voice multimodal ecosystem.
On the developer front, the coding model MAI-Code-1, designed with optimized reasoning efficiency, has been successfully integrated into GitHub Copilot and Visual Studio Code. The successful launch of multiple in-house models not only completes Microsoft's closed-loop ecosystem—from underlying reasoning to higher-level applications—but also underscores the tech giant's strategic commitment to achieving full AI self-sufficiency and reducing dependence on external technologies.
