Meta encountered some highly awkward technical glitches during the live demonstrations of its new smart glasses this week, and the reason has now been revealed. Andrew Bosworth, Meta’s chief technology officer, clarified in an Instagram AMA why two high-profile demos—one involving an influencer asking the AI assistant for cooking help, and another where Mark Zuckerberg tried to answer a WhatsApp call—didn’t go as planned.
“When the chef said, ‘Hey Meta, start Live AI,’ it activated the Live AI feature on every single pair of Meta Ray-Bans in the building,” Bosworth explained. “We had routed Live AI traffic to our development server, in theory to isolate it, but we applied that routing to everyone in the building using those access points. Essentially, we DDoS’d ourselves.” So contrary to Zuckerberg’s onstage explanation, Wi-Fi wasn’t to blame.
The video call failure was “more obscure,” according to Bosworth, stemming from a “never-before-seen bug” that occurred when the Display glasses entered sleep mode exactly as the call notification arrived. Bosworth confirmed that the issue has since been resolved but admitted that the live demo was “the worst possible moment for that bug to appear.”
Despite the onstage mishaps, Meta’s decision to conduct an honest, real-time product demo offers a refreshing contrast to the pre-recorded videos and generative AI missteps often presented by companies like Apple and Google nowadays.
