Mastercard has successfully processed its first live, authenticated agent-based payment in Singapore, marking a key step in moving autonomous AI commerce from experimental trials to practical, everyday applications.
Announced on March 4, 2026, the transaction was conducted in collaboration with DBS and UOB, two of Southeast Asia's leading financial institutions. In the demonstration, an AI agent arranged a ride to Singapore's Changi Airport via Hoppa, a global mobility service. The booking was facilitated by CardInfoLink's AI agent, which connects directly to Hoppa's network of taxis and airport limousines.
The transaction was powered by Mastercard Agent Pay, the company's secure framework for AI-initiated purchases. Every Agent Pay transaction utilizes a unique Mastercard Agentic Token, issued specifically for each agent. Explicit consumer consent is obtained and each purchase is confirmed securely using Mastercard Payment Passkeys.
Tokenized credentials, authenticated with these passkeys, provided robust consumer verification and ensured data protection throughout the entire process.
When Your AI Agent Handles the Payment
The importance of this demonstration extends far beyond a simple ride booking. Mastercard, DBS, and UOB have showcased a fully operational, end-to-end agentic payments system: an AI agent that identifies a need, chooses a service, initiates a financial transaction, and finalizes it—all without requiring a human to click "confirm."
This represents a significant turning point that is generating considerable discussion within the fintech industry. The central question surrounding agentic AI in finance has never been just about automating tasks. The debate has focused on whether these agents can be trusted to handle monetary transactions and what safeguards must be in place.
This live transaction provides a clear answer: through built-in tokenization, passkey authentication, and explicit consent mechanisms designed from the ground up, not added as an afterthought. Minsook Cho, Mastercard's Country Manager for Singapore, highlighted this as a model for responsible innovation: "Mastercard's first live agentic transaction demonstrates how innovation can be integrated into everyday services responsibly and securely with Agent Pay. By collaborating with forward-thinking partners like DBS and UOB, we are building the trusted foundations necessary for an AI-powered commerce ecosystem."
Echoing this focus on balancing innovation with security, Ananya Sen, Group Head of Regional Consumer Products at DBS, noted that their partnership with Mastercard shows how these core principles can be responsibly embedded from the very beginning.
Singapore and the Broader APAC Competitive Landscape
This is not Mastercard's first venture into agentic payments within the Asia-Pacific region. The company has completed similar authenticated transactions in Australia, New Zealand, and India. However, Singapore holds particular strategic importance.
Mastercard is establishing a regional AI Centre of Excellence in Singapore, described as its largest innovation hub in the area. It is also deploying specialized agentic commerce teams across APAC to assist financial institutions and merchants as they adopt agent-led customer experiences.
It is also notable that Singapore's major banks are advancing rapidly on this front from multiple angles. DBS completed a separate agentic payments pilot with Visa in February 2026, where AI agents executed food and beverage purchases using DBS and POSB cards.
The fact that the same bank features in both Mastercard and Visa's agentic milestones within a matter of weeks highlights how aggressively Singapore's financial sector is positioning itself for the coming era of agentic commerce.
Mastercard has announced plans to expand Agent Pay into transportation, travel, entertainment, and retail sectors—areas where manual payment steps create friction ripe for automation. The underlying infrastructure that allows AI agents to spend on your behalf is steadily being constructed. The ride to Changi Airport was merely the first journey.
