Google's Gemini AI Now Offers Instant PDF Summaries Upon Opening
Google is introducing new Gemini AI features for Workspace that streamline finding key information within PDFs and Google Forms responses. The file summarization tool in Google Drive, powered by Gemini, now works with PDFs and Forms, distilling important details and insights into a concise summary to spare users from manual review.
When a user opens a PDF in Drive, Gemini will automatically generate a summary card and suggest clickable actions based on the document's content. These might include "draft a sample proposal" or "list interview questions from this resume." Clicking any option directs Gemini to execute the task in the Drive side panel. This feature, supporting over 20 languages, began rolling out on June 12th for Google Workspace users and may take a few weeks to become fully visible.
A related Gemini feature for Google Forms summarizes responses to open-ended questions, analyzing the form's title, description, questions, and replies to extract central themes. This summary option appears in the Responses tab once a question receives more than three replies. Initially launching in English, the feature will be widely available to Workspace users starting June 26th.

The Google Forms summaries are designed to save time by eliminating the need to open each individual response to find needed information. Workspace users can include references to supporting Docs, Sheets, Slides, or PDFs in their prompts for Gemini to incorporate that information. For instance, a carpentry business could import its product catalogue to generate a quote estimation form for customers.

The "help me create" tool for Google Forms will also provide example prompts users can try to explore the feature's capabilities. GIF: GoogleAvailable in English, this feature will begin rolling out to standard Workspace domains on July 7th.
