Google’s AI now writes over 70% of new code, signaling a major shift in programming patterns

The way software is built at Google is undergoing a major shift. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai recently revealed that the company has made significant progress in using AI to boost productivity—now, more than 75% of new code is generated by AI.
This milestone reflects Google's progress in its AI-first strategy. However, AI-generated code isn't used directly; it still requires careful review and approval from engineers to ensure security and stability. Even so, AI's role in development has grown quickly: last April, about 30% of new code came from AI; by mid-year, that number had climbed sharply; as of October 2024, it had surpassed 25% and continued to rise, recently reaching over 70%.
Investment has also surged. Pichai's comments show Google is making a huge bet on its infrastructure. Last year, Alphabet's total capital expenditure was $91.4 billion, and that figure is expected to more than double this year, with annual spending projected between $175 billion and $185 billion.
This massive investment is mainly used to strengthen computing power and optimize AI models for high-impact internal tasks like automated programming. As for the question of whether AI will replace programmers, Google's current approach offers a clue: AI is evolving from a supporting tool into a core productivity driver, while engineers are shifting toward roles as code reviewers and architects.
