Google positions itself as AI design player at IO 2026

At Tuesday’s Google I/O, Google unveiled Pics, a new AI-driven design and image-generation tool for Google Workspace. The company states the app is built for accessibility, serving everyone from educators to small business owners.
Pics allows users to create social media graphics, invitations, marketing materials, and mock-ups using simple text prompts, requiring no prior editing expertise. By lowering the barrier to visual creation, Google aims to compete with established design platforms like Canva and AI-native tools such as Anthropic’s Claude Design. This move highlights that AI-powered design is rapidly becoming a critical battleground for businesses reliant on visual content.
Google announced that Pics is currently available to a select group of testers at I/O, with a broader rollout to Google AI Ultra subscribers planned for this summer.
While current AI models can produce high-quality images, refining specific elements remains challenging. If an image is nearly perfect but requires a minor adjustment, users typically must rewrite the entire prompt, risking unwanted changes. To address this, Pics combines image generation with robust editing capabilities.

Users can generate designs by entering a prompt, with Gemini powering the editing layer to make every element fully adjustable. Changes can be requested via new prompts or by clicking directly on the element to leave a comment, similar to feedback in Google Docs.
Direct editing is also supported without comments or prompts. For instance, if you need to update the time on a birthday invitation, you can make that change manually.
Pics runs on Nano Banana 2, chosen for its precise text rendering, real-world knowledge, and detailed visual output. The app is natively integrated into Google Workspace, facilitating visual collaboration across its suite.
Once satisfied with a design, users can download, copy, print, or share it. Google notes that designs can also be passed to others for final edits before distribution.
