Google Cloud Reports $20 Billion in Revenue, Despite Challenges from Limited Infrastructure Capacity

Google Cloud, a division of parent company Alphabet that specializes in delivering enterprise-grade AI solutions, delivered an outstanding performance in its latest quarterly results, with revenue reaching over $20 billion—a 63% increase compared to the same period last year. Nonetheless, investors who attended the company’s earnings call raised concerns regarding the operational constraints the business faces and Google’s strategies for allocating cloud resources.

For the first quarter of 2026, the company reported that its cloud business expanded driven by strong performance from Google Cloud Platform, which grew at a faster rate than the overall revenue growth of the entire Google Cloud division. This division encompasses a range of services including infrastructure solutions, data analytics tools, AI and machine learning platforms, as well as Google Workspace.

Alphabet’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, explained during the Q1 2026 earnings call that this growth was fueled by strong demand for Gemini Enterprise and other AI solutions offered by the company. He also highlighted increasing demand for infrastructure components such as TPU hardware and data center services.

AI-related solutions proved to be the primary driver of cloud growth, with products built on Google’s generative AI models showing nearly 800% year-over-year growth. The company also reported that Google Gemini Enterprise experienced 40% quarter-over-quarter growth, while the volume of AI tokens processed through its API rose to 16 billion tokens per minute, up from 10 billion in the previous quarter.

Pichai mentioned several other key achievements in the cloud business, including a doubling of new customer acquisitions year-over-year. The number of deals valued between $100 million and $1 billion also doubled, with the company closing multiple deals worth over a billion dollars. Additionally, he noted that customers were exceeding their initial service commitments by 45% on a quarter-over-quarter basis.

Despite these positive developments, the executive warned that there are still limitations to the current growth trajectory. He pointed out that Google Cloud’s backlog of pending orders had doubled to $462 billion during that quarter. However, he framed this situation as a sign of the company’s strength, emphasizing that it distinguishes Google Cloud from its competitors.

Pichai acknowledged that the company faces short-term computing constraints, stating, “Obviously, we are compute constrained in the near-term.” He added that cloud revenue would have been higher if the company had been able to meet all incoming demand. He explained that the company is actively working to address these challenges through continued investment, while also relying on a solid long-term planning strategy that positions it to seize significant opportunities in the future.

The company projects that it will be able to resolve 50% of its current backlog within the next 24 months.

A significant portion of the company’s revenue potential comes from providing cloud infrastructure services, with some customers also purchasing TPU hardware directly from the company. Pichai informed investors that Google adopts a business approach focused on maximizing return on capital investment, which enables the company to keep investing in cutting-edge technologies.
