Google Cloud Closes Gap in AI Race With Accentner Partnership

Google Cloud and Accenture have formed a joint initiative to deploy engineers into enterprises, assisting organizations in effectively integrating Google’s AI tools and services.
Named the Accenture Gemini Enterprise Business Group, this new unit marks Google’s latest move into the rapidly growing field of “forward-deployed engineers” (FDEs). Competitors in the AI sector, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Amazon, have recently established similar business units, betting that AI implementation services could become a trillion-dollar industry.
This strategy is increasingly essential for AI companies and hyperscalers. Despite investing hundreds of billions of dollars annually in GPUs, data centers, and power infrastructure, the revenue directly generated by AI currently represents only a small fraction of these massive investments.
Google Cloud reported $24.8 billion in revenue for the second quarter, significantly driven by enterprise AI adoption. However, the underlying commitments supporting this growth are substantial. Alphabet, Google Cloud’s parent company, held approximately $811 billion in purchase commitments and contractual obligations as of June 30.
This return on investment has not yet materialized to the extent expected by companies and investors. Consequently, success depends on whether AI providers can generate sufficient demand for their services. This demand remains uncertain, as many enterprises are still struggling to achieve a tangible return on their AI expenditures.
It is widely believed that enterprises have lacked the expertise to seamlessly integrate AI tools into their workflows in a manner that saves money and generates long-term value. Forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) are designed to fill this gap, offering steady guidance with a blend of business insight and advanced AI capabilities to drive transformation.
Under the agreement with Accenture, Google will train up to 1,000 of the consultancy’s FDEs. These engineers will collaborate with enterprises to develop custom AI applications using the Gemini Enterprise platform.
Data from Ramp in August indicates that Google accounts for approximately 6% of enterprise AI spending among U.S. businesses, compared to Anthropic’s 43.5% and OpenAI’s 39.7%. The new Accenture partnership, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, represents Google’s latest aggressive expansion of its FDE model this year, aimed at overcoming enterprise deployment bottlenecks and closing the gap with competitors.
Earlier this year, Google Cloud announced a $750 million commitment to its partner ecosystem, embedding Google’s own FDEs within multiple consulting firms, including Capgemini, Cognizant, and Deloitte. Additionally, the tech giant entered a multi-year partnership with CVC Capital Partners to deploy FDEs directly into the investment firm’s portfolio companies.
Google is not the only major player at risk of being overtaken by newer firms. Companies specializing in embedding engineers to build custom AI workflows, such as Ode with Anthropic or OpenAI’s The Deployment Co., pose a threat to large consultancy firms like Accenture. For the professional services giant, the Google partnership complements its own series of FDE programs launched this year, including a Microsoft FDE practice in March, a ServiceNow initiative in May, and a joint program with SAP in June.
