Google Chrome, the world's most widely used browser, has come under scrutiny after it was found silently downloading its 4GB Gemini Nano model to eligible devices without user consent. Even after manually deleting the files, the browser reportedly re-downloads them in the background without notice. This forced installation has raised serious concerns within the tech community.
Gemini Nano is a lightweight large language model Google designed for local deployment, primarily to support its controversial Prompt API feature. Despite being called "lightweight," it demands at least 16GB of RAM, 4GB of VRAM, and approximately 22GB of free space on the browser's installation partition.
With Chrome serving around 3.8 billion users globally, a substantial portion of devices meet these hardware requirements. Industry analysts note that pushing 4GB of data to hundreds of millions of devices—even without accounting for repeated downloads due to the silent reinstall behavior—represents a massive waste of bandwidth and storage.
For perspective, Chrome's own installer is only about 1GB. The AI model stealthily delivered to users is four times larger than the browser itself, far exceeding what most users would expect from a standard feature update or plugin enhancement.
