First Google Academic Research Award Winners Announced

We're all about using research to build a brighter future, which is why we kicked off the Google Academic Research Awards (GARA) program. GARA is all about backing cutting-edge research in computing and tech that could tackle some big global issues.
We're thrilled to share that we've just announced the very first round of GARA award winners! This cycle, we're supporting a whopping 95 projects, spearheaded by 143 researchers from 87 institutions across 24 countries. Their work is spot on with Google's focus on responsible innovation, covering six key areas:
- Developing ML benchmarks to tackle climate challenges
- Using AI to make education more fair and reachable
- Advancing quantum transduction and networking
- Building AI that puts society first
- Enhancing trust and safety
- Leveraging Gemini and Google's open model family to crack systems and infrastructure puzzles
Our goal with GARA is to speed up scientific progress. Each winner gets up to $150,000 USD and a personal Google sponsor to guide them through their project.
Check out what these inaugural GARA winners are up to and dive deeper into the program at goo.gle/gara. We can't wait to see how these projects will change the world for the better.
