GitHub transitioned its AI coding assistant, Copilot, to a usage-based billing structure yesterday. This shift marks the end of the "low-cost unlimited monthly subscription" era, replacing it with a cloud service model that deducts "GitHub AI points" based on the specific model and Token usage.
According to updated official documentation, the $10/month Copilot Pro plan now provides 1,500 points (comprising 1,000 base points and 500 flexible points). Meanwhile, the $39/month Pro+ and $100/month Copilot Max plans offer 7,000 and 20,000 points, respectively. While core code completion and Next Edit suggestions remain free and unlimited, features such as Copilot Chat, command-line integration, code review, and complex cloud or third-party programming agent tasks are now point-based.
GitHub announced this strategic shift on April 27, explaining that Copilot has evolved from a simple code completion tool into an intelligent agent platform operating across repositories. The sharp rise in reasoning costs for multi-step automated tasks has made the previous model, where the platform absorbed these expenses, unsustainable.
This change sparked immediate feedback from the developer community. Some heavy users reported consuming over half of their monthly quota within just a few hours.
