Doubao to launch paid features, accelerating ByteDance's large model monetization

The large model market in China is undergoing a notable shift from free access to paid subscriptions. According to recent reports, ByteDance's flagship AI product Douyin is expected to launch a paid subscription feature around mid-June this year. This move not only pushes one of the country's largest large model applications into deeper commercialization but also signals that the consumer AI market is moving beyond the era of free services.
Reports indicate that the pricing model introduced by Douyin has relatively low entry points. For ongoing monthly subscribers, the subscription fee is expected to start at 68 yuan per month. Industry observers view this as a natural step for leading AI model developers, who after building a large user base, are now exploring sustainable revenue streams to achieve financial independence.
When asked whether this shift could cause market volatility, Zhu Qi, an analyst at Galaxy Securities, noted in a recent report that the move toward paid large model services has a long-term positive impact on tech and AI-related sectors. Zhu believes that as large model technology continues to be refined, high-quality, professional, and efficient AI services will eventually command fair market prices. A sustainable business model would allow companies to reinvest revenue into further R&D improvements for their underlying models.
From a broader industry perspective, this development is expected to act as a key catalyst for valuation recovery and restructuring within the sector. As commercialization benefits materialize, leading companies with strong subscription retention and monetization capabilities are likely to see further expansion in their valuation multiples.
