Approximately a year ago, X – owned by Elon Musk – announced its intention to completely rebuild the Android version of its app, which had performed significantly worse than its iOS counterpart. The updated version was released on Monday and is now available for download.
According to X’s official announcement, the new Android version was developed from scratch and is designed to deliver enhancements across various aspects of the app experience, including loading speeds, scrolling performance, and notification functionality.

The development of this update took nearly a year. Last August, Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, stated that the company had assembled a dedicated team to completely overhaul the Android experience. Later that same year, he reported that X experienced one of its highest-ever weeks for Android app downloads in October, which underscored why delivering a new version was a top priority for the company.
In his remarks following today’s release, Bier described this effort as “one of the largest engineering projects” in the company’s history, emphasizing that the new Android app was built entirely from scratch rather than being a simple update to the existing version.

Bier wrote on X that the new app is faster, smoother, and more reliable. More importantly, he added, it will enable the team to develop new features at a much quicker pace. In recent months, X has launched several new features, such as X Money and X Chat, which have each been offered as separate standalone apps.
The release of this Android version may also help attract more users in global markets where Android is the most widely used smartphone operating system, encouraging them to either download X or return to using the platform after years of neglect. At one point last year, issues with the Android version were so severe that the app could not even display X posts when users clicked on links.
That said, Bier noted that there are still some areas that require improvement, including enhancing performance on older Android devices and adding support for Spaces, X’s live audio feature. Work on these updates is currently in progress. He also mentioned that additional features such as a new video editor, the react-with-video function, cashtags, and custom timelines are set to arrive on Android in the near future.
Current Android users can obtain the updated X app by updating their existing installation through the Google Play Store.
