Y Combinator Startup Abandons Windows AI Agent Project to Pivot

A startup from Y Combinator's Winter 2025 batch, Pig.dev, was developing a potentially groundbreaking concept: AI agent technology designed to control a Microsoft Windows desktop.

However, in May, the founder announced a pivot, abandoning the original tech to focus on an entirely new venture: Muscle Mem, a caching system for AI agents that handles repeatable tasks.

While it's common for early-stage YC companies to pivot, what sparked a lively discussion on a recent Y Combinator podcast was Pig.dev's focus on computer use. This is a key challenge that must be solved for AI agents to become truly practical for professional work. Browser Use, another YC alumnus, is tackling a similar problem for web browsers.

Browser Use gained significant traction after the Chinese agentic tool Manus, which depended on it, went viral. The tool works by converting a website's buttons and elements into a more accessible, text-like format, helping AI agents understand how to navigate and operate the site.

On the podcast, YC partner Tom Blomfield compared Pig.dev's original vision to "Browser Use for Windows desktops." The episode featured Amjad Massad, founder and CEO of the popular coding platform Replit.

Massad, Blomfield, and YC partner David Lieb discussed how agents still struggle with using computers for extended periods, not just minutes. As an agent's reasoning context expands, its accuracy can decline while computational costs rise.

"My advice to founders today would be to take the approach of Browser Use or Pig.dev's Windows automation and apply it to a specific enterprise or vertical industry," Blomfield suggested.

Massad agreed, stating, "The moment that technology proves viable, those two companies are positioned for tremendous success."

Despite this potential, Pig.dev's founder, Erik Dunteman, has moved on. In a May post, he explained his initial plan to offer a cloud API product, a standard method for delivering AI technology. However, customers weren't interested. He then tried marketing it as a developer tool, which also failed to gain traction.

"What customers in the legacy app automation space really want is to pay money and receive a completed automation," he said. Essentially, they preferred hiring a consultant to build their desired Windows robotic process automations.

Dunteman, however, didn't want to pursue one-off consulting projects. His goal was to build scalable development tools. Consequently, he shelved the Pig.dev project and began working on an AI caching tool. Dunteman declined to comment further on his decision to leave Windows automation, though the Pig.dev website and GitHub documentation are still accessible.

He did clarify that his new venture was inspired by the computer use challenge, addressing it from a different perspective. Muscle Mem is designed to let AI agents offload repetitive tasks to its service, freeing the agent to concentrate on reasoning through new problems and edge cases.

"Our current work is directly inspired by and applicable to computer use, but operates at the developer tooling layer. I remain highly optimistic about computer use as the 'last mile' problem to solve," he told TechCrunch.

This doesn't mean work on Windows automation has stopped altogether.

Microsoft is likely the company with the most advanced efforts in this area. For example, in April, Microsoft announced the integration of computer use technology into Copilot Studio for graphical interfaces like Windows, released as a research preview. Additionally, earlier this month, Microsoft unveiled an agentic tool in Windows 11 designed to help end-users manage system settings.

看到這消息有點可惜,原本的點子聽起來很酷啊!用AI直接控制Windows桌面,如果能實現應該會改變很多人的工作方式吧?不過新創公司調整方向也是常態,期待他們之後的發展。💻

Interesting pivot! I wonder if the Windows AI agent space is just too crowded or if there were specific technical hurdles with the OS itself. Makes you think about the real-world challenges of deploying these 'autonomous' agents beyond demos. Good luck to them on the new direction!
