Claude Code Unveils Voice Mode Feature

Anthropic is introducing a Voice Mode to Claude Code, its AI-powered coding assistant for developers. The launch of this voice feature represents a major move toward enabling more conversational, hands-free coding workflows.
Anthropic engineer Thariq Shihipar announced the feature's staged rollout on X this Tuesday. Shihipar noted that Voice Mode is currently active for roughly 5% of users, with a wider release scheduled for the coming weeks.
The mode aims to simplify coding by allowing users to give Claude Code spoken instructions. To activate it, type /voice to toggle it on, then speak your command for Claude Code to execute—for example, "refactor the authentication middleware."
Voice mode is rolling out now in Claude Code. It’s live for ~5% of users today, and will be ramping through the coming weeks.

The specific limitations of this new capability are not yet clear, including any potential caps on voice interactions or underlying technical constraints. It is also unknown if the feature was developed in partnership with a third-party AI voice provider like ElevenLabs, a company Anthropic was reportedly in discussions with.
Anthropic has not yet replied to TechCrunch's request for comment.
The company first launched Voice Mode for its standard Claude chatbot last May, enabling voice interactions for a range of general tasks.
The AI coding assistant space is highly competitive, with rivals like Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Google, and OpenAI all seeking developer adoption. Despite this, Claude Code has emerged as one of the market's most widely used tools. In February, Anthropic reported that Claude Code's annual run-rate revenue exceeded $2.5 billion, more than doubling since the start of 2026. Weekly active users have also doubled since January.
In related news, Claude's mobile app experienced a significant surge in user growth after the company declined a Department of Defense request to use its AI for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons. Following this decision, the app quickly rose to the top of the U.S. App Store charts, surpassing ChatGPT.
