Google.org Accelerator Opens New Round for Generative AI Projects

Generative AI holds genuine promise for advancing solutions to many of humanity's most critical challenges. Recent Google research highlights AI's role in driving progress across all 17 of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
However, significant barriers hinder broader adoption of this technology. According to a 2024 Google for Nonprofits survey, four out of five nonprofit organizations recognize generative AI's relevance to their work, yet nearly half remain unable to implement it due to insufficient awareness, training, tools, and funding. To help overcome these obstacles, Google.org introduced the Generative AI Accelerator in 2024, supporting 21 organizations in developing AI-powered solutions that collectively aim to benefit over 30 million people by 2028.
The inaugural Generative AI Accelerator cohort created solutions spanning multiple sectors—from addressing youth unemployment to advancing sustainability and empowering individuals in humanitarian crises. These initiatives align with Google.org's core focus areas: Knowledge, Skills, and Learning; Scientific Advancement; and Resilient Communities. For instance:
Knowledge, Skills, and Learning
Tabiya leveraged Google Cloud tools like Vertex AI to create Compass, an open-source conversational agent powered by generative AI. Designed to combat youth unemployment—especially in low- and middle-income countries—Compass aims to double the number of job seekers a single career counselor can assist. Learn more.
Scientific Advancement
Materiom is accelerating the development of sustainable plastic alternatives tenfold with Gemini, streamlining research and entrepreneurship by identifying innovative substitutes for petroleum-based plastics. Learn more.
Resilient Communities
The International Rescue Committee’s SignpostAI uses Gemini to provide personalized, essential information in more than 25 languages, empowering individuals affected by severe humanitarian crises. The initiative aims to reach half of all forcibly displaced people within five years. Learn more.
Now, to enable even more organizations to leverage generative AI for social good, Google.org is launching a global open call for the second cohort of the Generative AI Accelerator.
Nonprofits, civic entities, academic institutions, and social enterprises advancing social impact within Google.org's three focus areas are encouraged to apply. Selected organizations will join a six-month accelerator program featuring technical training, Google Cloud credits, pro-bono support from Google experts, and a share of $30 million in funding. Apply by February 10, 2025, at g.co/Accelerator/GenAI.
