ByteDance spins off AI drug development unit for independent financing, retains control

ByteDance’s AI drug development unit has officially started its separation and independent financing process, according to 36Kr. After the separation, ByteDance will retain a controlling stake in the new company. The core team, key algorithms, technology platform, and existing pipeline assets of the AI drug development division will be fully integrated into the new entity, which will be led by the original ByteDance AI drug development team. Furthermore, this independent business will continue to receive underlying computing power support from Volcano Engine.
The team was established in 2021 and is led by Liu Kai. It currently has about 50 core members, including AI4S (AI for Science) algorithm experts and experienced pharmaceutical professionals. From the beginning, the team has handled core functions ranging from foundational model research to industrial application. Prior to this separation, ByteDance’s internal team responsible for protein structure prediction models had been smoothly integrated into Liu Kai’s AI drug development team, achieving deep consolidation of the algorithm and model teams. Aside from a few departures, the team will continue advancing foundational model research in this field.
As a prime example of the intersection between large models and cutting-edge science, AI-driven drug development has become a new competitive arena for tech giants. By spinning off its AI drug development business and securing external funding, ByteDance not only optimizes resource allocation and boosts commercialization efficiency but also marks a new phase in transforming its AI4S business from internal incubation within a large company to market-oriented independent operations. This move could accelerate the industrial application of AI4S in the biopharmaceutical sector.
