On May 28, Asana, a leading collaboration software company, announced the completion of its acquisition of StackAI, an innovative workflow automation firm. The deal, valued at $75 million, is one of Asana's largest recent moves and a critical step toward becoming an AI-native workplace platform. The two co-founders of StackAI will join Asana's team as part of the transaction.
According to Asana's official statement, the acquisition will be integrated into its broader AI strategy. The company aims to evolve its platform into an "operating system for humans and AI agents working together." This news was disclosed during Asana's quarterly earnings call and investor conference on Thursday afternoon.
StackAI, a standout project from Y Combinator's Winter 2023 batch, develops AI workflow automation tools that embed into existing business systems. It retrieves and combines data from platforms like Salesforce, Slack, and Gsuite. Despite competing with established players like Zapier and AI labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic, StackAI demonstrated unique commercial value. Prior to the acquisition, it had raised nearly $20 million, including a $16 million Series A round.
While Asana is often perceived as a traditional task management tool, the company has built a substantial AI product line in recent years, including the AI Studio agent builder and the AI Teammates series of pre-built automation tools. Unlike general-purpose tools from foundational AI companies, Asana's core advantage lies in its deep integration with existing enterprise workflows, allowing it to capture business context and training data that other platforms cannot access.
After the surge of generative AI, Asana faced challenges in public markets, with its market value dropping by more than half since ChatGPT's launch. However, its revenue has continued to grow steadily. With a restructured management team and a firm commitment to human-AI agent collaboration products, the company is confident about future performance recovery. Asana's CEO emphasized that the StackAI acquisition will significantly shorten the company's R&D cycle, advancing the team into a new stage of human-machine collaboration and helping enterprises achieve end-to-end AI agentization of the most complex business processes.
