Apple's Hardware Future: Ternus Takes the Helm

As Apple strives to maintain its competitive edge in AI while contending with tariffs and supply chain instability, the company's future is poised for a significant shift under new leadership.

On Monday, Apple announced that John Ternus will succeed Tim Cook as CEO later this year.

Cook's tenure transformed Apple into a $4 trillion global powerhouse, expanded its services division, and oversaw some of the most profitable years in tech history. Ternus brings a different skillset to the role. A veteran hardware executive, his career has been dedicated to building Apple's devices rather than managing the broader corporate strategy.

Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and ascended through the hardware engineering ranks. He has played a key role in developing some of the company's most iconic products, including AirPods, the Apple Watch, and the Vision Pro.

His appointment signals a renewed emphasis on hardware at a critical juncture, as Apple faces pressure to define its next chapter. Ternus will now be instrumental in shaping that vision.

Hardware with AI at the Core

Instead of competing directly with companies developing the largest AI models, Ternus may steer Apple toward a focus on AI-powered devices themselves—whether they're handheld, wearable, or designed for the home.

Speculation is already rife about Apple's next potential launches. Concepts under consideration reportedly include smart glasses, a wearable pendant with an integrated camera, and even AI-enhanced AirPods. According to Bloomberg, the unifying idea is that all these products would connect to the iPhone, with Siri serving as a central interface.

Ternus is also expected to advance products that have been in development limbo. Foldable iPhones are a prime example. Rumored for years, Apple has taken a more measured approach than competitors, waiting for the technology to meet its exacting standards. Reports indicate a potential launch this September, which would fall under Ternus's oversight.

Apple has also been exploring robotics, particularly for home use. One concept involves a tabletop device featuring a robotic arm attached to a display, essentially creating a mobile smart assistant that can orient itself toward the user. This aligns notably with Ternus's longstanding interest in robotics. As the New York Times reported, he built a device in college that enabled quadriplegics to control a mechanical feeding arm using head movements.

Other concepts include mobile robots that could follow users, handle simple tasks, or function as a moving FaceTime screen. Some reports even mention experiments with humanoid robots, though such projects are likely years from realization.

While none of these projects are guaranteed to reach the market, they offer a clear indication of Apple's potential strategic direction.

However, ongoing memory chip shortages, the volatility of U.S. tariff policies, and Apple's deep reliance on Chinese manufacturing could present significant near-term challenges. Prior to recent tariff shifts, approximately 80% of iPhones were produced in China. The company has since accelerated its pivot to India, where it manufactured about a quarter of its iPhones last year, according to Bloomberg.
