Apple Smart Glasses Could Debut at WWDC27, Highlighting Privacy Protection

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple’s smart glasses, codenamed N50, are slated for a WWDC27 debut in June 2027, with a retail launch expected in autumn 2027. Originally targeted for late this year and early 2027, the device’s release has been postponed to allow for further product refinement and the enhancement of privacy protocols.
Privacy remains a central pillar of Apple’s smart glasses strategy. Learning from privacy controversies surrounding competitors like Meta, Apple is implementing robust features and policies. Options under consideration include removing the camera entirely to focus on AI interaction, audio playback, and calls, or retaining the camera while disabling photo and video recording, using it solely for environmental perception and AI visual input. These features will integrate with iPhone visual intelligence and upcoming camera-equipped AirPods.
Regarding privacy mechanisms, Apple may adopt design cues from Meta’s recording indicator lights and test new software and hardware protections. Gurman notes that Apple will maintain its “privacy-first” stance, prioritizing edge AI processing to avoid sensitive functions like facial recognition. The company will not introduce a “super-perception” mode akin to Meta’s, nor will it use user audio or video data to train AI models.
As AI smart glasses become a priority for major tech firms, Apple aims to differentiate itself through robust privacy measures and edge AI capabilities, potentially steering the smart glasses market toward greater security and user trust.
