Apple Revives Image Playground with ChatGPT Integration
When Apple introduced Image Playground last year, the company promoted it as a fast and simple tool for creating personalized, original images using Apple Intelligence. However, the app's debut was met with some doubt, as a number of users found its capabilities limited and the output quality underwhelming.
For instance, one Reddit user noticed that Image Playground repeatedly produced an image of a hand with six fingers when asked to generate a "close-up image of a hand." Another user reported difficulty obtaining images for straightforward prompts like "old man" or "flower."
Some even questioned the app's purpose, suggesting it felt too basic when stacked against well-known AI image generators. (Of course, not all feedback was negative—some described the experience as enjoyable and lighthearted.)
At this year's WWDC, however, Apple announced plans to enhance Image Playground through a new ChatGPT integration, promising a more advanced and capable AI image generation service.
Thanks to this ChatGPT integration, users will gain access to a broader range of visual styles—going beyond the emoji-like images the app has become known for.
New style options will include Oil Painting, Watercolor, Vector, Anime, and Print. Users can also select an "Any Style" option and specify exactly what kind of image they want. These new styles will appear under a "ChatGPT style" banner.

Boston, MA|July 15REGISTER NOWApple confirms that Image Playground will send user descriptions to ChatGPT to create images. The company assures that no information is shared with ChatGPT without the user's consent.
By incorporating ChatGPT into Image Playground, Apple aims to revive user interest and present its AI image tool as a more fully-rounded competitor against other free alternatives.
It also makes strategic sense for Apple to tap into ChatGPT’s capabilities to strengthen Image Playground, especially considering its existing use of OpenAI’s technology in other areas.
Last year, Apple announced it was bringing ChatGPT to Siri and various built-in apps and features across its operating systems. With Siri, the assistant calls on ChatGPT when it can’t answer a question independently or when explicitly asked by the user. Apple has also woven ChatGPT into system-wide tools like Writing Tools, letting users create, refine, and summarize text in apps such as Notes and Mail.
The updated Image Playground app is slated to launch this fall alongside iOS 26.
