On Thursday, Apple released its annual update on the App Store ecosystem, just ahead of next week's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). According to the company, the App Store facilitated more than $1.4 trillion in developer billings and sales in 2025, up from $1.3 trillion reported at the same time last year.
This figure encompasses all business conducted through apps on the platform, illustrating how the App Store generates financial opportunities for mobile developers beyond just in-app purchase revenue. It also positions Apple's commission — charged on in-app purchases of digital goods — as a relatively small slice of the total pie.
Apple noted that 90% of the $1.4 trillion came from transactions where developers paid no commissions.
Breaking it down further, the 2025 total includes $1.1 trillion in physical goods and services sales, and $149 billion in digital goods billings and sales. The digital portion is largely subject to a 15% to 30% commission, depending on transaction type and business size, and is up from $131 billion last year. However you look at it, this remains a multi-billion-dollar market from which Apple collects a share.
Apple also reported that in-app advertising revenue reached $151 billion in 2025, up from $150 billion the previous year.

Apple also pointed out that the App Store had over 850 million average weekly users across 175 countries and regions in 2025.
Notably, Apple singled out AI apps, noting that 40 of the top 100 apps in 2025 featured consumer-facing AI capabilities and experienced stronger billing growth than the rest of the top 100. This may pave the way for a WWDC announcement regarding Apple's rumored plans to allow AI agents on the App Store.
Apple is also expected to make its own AI-related announcements at WWDC, including a revamped Siri and deeper AI integration across its operating systems.
Apple's update also highlighted the App Store's growth in China, noting that billings and sales facilitated by the platform have more than doubled there over the past six years. In the U.S. and Europe, they more than tripled. Again, the vast majority comes from physical goods and services such as retail, grocery delivery, ride-hailing, travel, and more.
