Apple, Alibaba Forge China-Specific Large Language Model Through Deep Local Ecosystem Integration

Amidst mounting pressure on sales and market share in China’s fiercely competitive landscape, Apple is quietly recalibrating its artificial intelligence strategy for the region. Industry sources indicate that Apple has developed a specialized large language model tailored specifically for Chinese users, a milestone achieved through deep technical collaboration with Alibaba, which supported the core model training.
Previously, speculation suggested Apple would integrate domestic third-party large models to power generative AI features on iPhones sold in China. While Apple’s U.S. strategy relies on combining its proprietary technology with overseas models like OpenAI and Anthropic, these foreign AI services cannot directly operate in China due to regulatory constraints. Partnering with a local tech giant to build a dedicated model represents a significant departure from Apple’s traditional operational approach.
Under current plans, Apple’s comprehensive AI suite, Apple Intelligence, will officially launch in China via an upcoming iOS update within the next few months. By developing and adapting a large language model to the Chinese context, Apple retains full control over the AI user experience locally. This initiative also positions Apple as the first foreign technology company to implement a dual-track AI deployment strategy in China and the first to secure domestic regulatory approval for its own dedicated large model.
