Anthropic's Claude Plugin Update Enables Cross-App Excel and PowerPoint Workflows
Anthropic has taken a significant step toward ultimate office automation by announcing major upgrades to its Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint add-ins for Claude. The update introduces two core features—Shared Context and Reusable Skills—designed to eliminate the hassle of constantly switching between applications and manually transferring data.

Cross-Application Collaboration: Seamless Transition from Data to Presentation
The standout feature of this update is that Claude can now coordinate tasks across Excel and PowerPoint simultaneously.
Shared Context: Claude now has a unified memory across both applications, allowing it to recall the financial analysis logic you performed in Excel and automatically generate corresponding charts and summaries in PowerPoint—no need to re-enter instructions or manually copy content.
Background Automation: Users simply give instructions in one window, and Claude operates across programs in the background. For instance, analysts can ask Claude to retrieve comparative data from Excel and populate the competitor analysis slide in PowerPoint, while simultaneously drafting a report email.
Skill Reuse: Building Team-Specific Action Packages
To boost productivity further, the new version introduces the Skills feature, enabling users to save complex, frequently used workflows as quick-access shortcuts:
Custom Workflows: Users can save complex commands—such as "audit financial model formula errors" or "generate a cleaning report from a messy dataset"—as skills.
Official Starter Pack: Anthropic has also released several preset skills covering common office scenarios, including data cleaning and building competitor pages in PowerPoint.
Enterprise-Level Security and Deployment
To meet the demands of professional environments, the new features are now available to paid Claude users on Mac and Windows.
Flexible Integration: Enterprises can deploy these plugins via existing cloud infrastructure like Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or Microsoft Foundry, ensuring data flows comply with their existing security and compliance standards.
Privacy Protection: All input and output data is automatically deleted from Anthropic's backend within 30 days, and cross-session chat records are not persistently stored.
While the intelligence level has greatly improved, the current Claude plugins still have limitations: they can only read and operate files that users have manually opened, and cannot create, open, or close local files on their own.
As Claude integrates more deeply into the Microsoft Office ecosystem, the AI assistant's role is evolving from a simple "chat window" into a "super scheduler" that can understand complex business logic and execute tasks across platforms.
