AI’s potential to tackle the UK’s productivity puzzle

AI Could Boost UK Economy by £400bn – But Only If Workers Embrace It
The UK is on the brink of a massive economic opportunity—£400 billion in growth powered by AI. But here’s the catch: half of that potential depends on workers actually adopting AI tools. While interest in AI has skyrocketed, many people still haven’t tapped into its power to transform their work and productivity.
The AI Adoption Gap: Who’s Being Left Behind?
Right now, two-thirds (66%) of UK workers—particularly older women and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds—have never used generative AI at work. And when it comes to businesses, smaller firms are lagging far behind larger ones in AI adoption.
These trends show we can’t afford to leave AI adoption to chance. That’s why, last summer, we launched ‘AI Works’—a partnership aimed at accelerating AI adoption and upskilling. Building on over a decade of digital skills training (which has already reached 1 million+ Brits), we teamed up with unions, small businesses, and educators from 15 UK schools to test different upskilling methods.
Our AI Works pilot involved 1,700 people across public and private sectors, from small startups to large corporations. The goal? To find the most effective ways to get people using AI—and fast.
The AI Works Report: Key Findings
Our newly released AI Works report reveals some game-changing insights—and practical steps to unlock AI’s full economic potential. Here’s what we discovered:
1. AI Habits Are Easy to Form
- Just a few hours of training can double daily AI usage—and this boost lasts months after training.
- Upskilling narrows the adoption gap, especially among women over 50, who saw some of the biggest gains.
2. Workers Want "Permission to Prompt"
- Many employees hesitate to use AI because they’re unsure if it’s allowed.
- Once given clear guidance, workers treat AI like any other productivity tool—similar to how they use search engines to work smarter.
3. AI Saves Serious Time
- Workers across different sectors estimate AI saves them over 122 hours a year—beating our initial estimate of 100 hours.
- That’s more than three full workweeks of time saved—just by using AI efficiently.
What’s Next? How the UK Can Lead in AI
At Google, we’re evolving our Google Digital Garage program based on these findings. Here’s what we’re doing—and what needs to happen next:
✅ Expanding AI Upskilling
- Launching ‘AI Prompting Essentials’, a new interactive webinar to help workers master AI prompts.
- Rolling out pilot resources to all UK schools in the Google for Education network.
- Expanding partnerships with Enterprise Nation and Community Union to reach more small businesses and workers.
🚀 Recommendations for Leaders
- Businesses must get on board: The Industrial Strategy should actively support AI adoption in key industries.
- The public sector should lead by example: We’re calling on the UK Government to guarantee AI training and tools for all public sector workers.
- Build a lifelong learning culture: We need a Skills England-backed accreditation system to recognise short, effective AI courses.
The Bottom Line
AI isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a £400bn opportunity for the UK. But without widespread adoption, half of that potential vanishes. The good news? Small steps—like a few hours of training—can make a huge difference.
