Windows 11 Task Manager Adds NPU Performance Monitoring

Microsoft has rolled out a significant enhancement to the Task Manager in the latest Windows 11 development update. This release fills the final gap in hardware monitoring by introducing real-time tracking for the Neural Processing Unit (NPU).
As the AI PC concept gains traction, the NPU has emerged as the key hardware for handling artificial intelligence workloads. Until now, users lacked a clear view of the NPU's operational status. This update brings transparency, making the dedicated chip's activity fully visible.
In the newest preview build 26300.8142, the Task Manager now includes an NPU column on the Processes, Users, and Details tabs. Users can monitor the NPU's real-time utilization and see how various applications consume both dedicated and shared memory.
Microsoft has also expanded the monitoring scope. The Performance page now comprehensively tracks the activity of the neural network engine integrated within the graphics card. Consequently, all AI-related operations across the system will be fully captured by the Task Manager.
This upgrade signals the NPU's official integration into the mainstream hardware performance toolkit. For developers and power users, it provides more than just additional metrics—it enables precise optimization of AI application power efficiency and performance.
Currently, this feature is primarily available to Windows Insiders in the preview channel, with a broader release still to come. As NPU monitoring becomes standard, future Windows systems are expected to evolve more deeply around the AI hardware ecosystem.
