Wikimedia Foundation announces AI partnerships with Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Perplexity, and others

To mark its 25th anniversary, the Wikimedia Foundation has announced new partnerships with several AI companies that have become customers of Wikimedia Enterprise, its commercial product. This platform, built by the foundation, enables large-scale reuse and distribution of content from Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
Alongside the previously disclosed partnership with Google in 2022, the foundation has now publicly revealed for the first time that it has also partnered with Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity over the past year. Other previously mentioned partners like Ecosia, Pleias, and ProRata are also part of this announcement, together with Nomic and Reef Media.
These agreements provide Wikipedia with an additional means of sustainability in an era where much of its content is being absorbed and reused by AI models and other tech products that deliver quick, factual answers to users. Wikimedia Enterprise is not merely about charging tech companies for access; it also gives them the ability to use Wikimedia project data at the scale and speed required for their operations.
The foundation also highlighted in a blog post that Wikipedia is currently among the top 10 most visited websites worldwide, with audiences viewing over 65 million articles in more than 300 languages nearly 15 billion times each month.
"Wikipedia demonstrates that knowledge is inherently human and depends on people," said Selena Deckelmann, CPO and CTO of the Wikimedia Foundation, in a statement. "Especially now, in the age of AI, we need the human-driven knowledge of Wikipedia more than ever. With continued support from readers, volunteer editors, donors, partners, and fans worldwide, Wikipedia will remain an essential hub for human-powered knowledge and collaboration online for the next 25 years and beyond."
Beyond the tech partnership news, the foundation has launched a birthday campaign featuring a new video docuseries that provides a behind-the-scenes look at Wikipedia volunteers around the globe. It has also introduced a "25 Years of Wikipedia" time capsule that explores the site's past, present, and future, with narration from founder Jimmy Wales. A livestreamed birthday event will take place on January 15 at 4:00 p.m. UTC, featuring guests, games, and entertainment, and will be available on Wikipedia's YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram channels.
The foundation's birthday announcements also emphasized other recent developments, including upgrades to its technical infrastructure, its own approach to AI, and new experiments such as games and short-form video, among others.
