WeChat Pay Unveils New AI-Powered Payment Feature; Exclusive AI-Driven Card Set for Release This Week
WeChat Pay is partnering with Tencent’s AI tool WorkBuddy to evaluate innovative AI-powered payment solutions. The two entities aim to introduce an “AI Exclusive Card” within WeChat Wallet, offering specialized payment functions tailored for AI agents. While an early rollout is expected this week, WeChat Pay has not yet provided official confirmation regarding the launch timeline.
Details of the “AI Exclusive Card” reveal that it operates under a separate fund management system, with spending limits set based on the user’s top-up amount. Users can adjust and manage the payment authorization settings at any time, ensuring funds are used exclusively for their designated purposes. Additionally, even when an AI agent initiates a payment request, users must still verify the transaction through a password to maintain security and control over their assets.

These tests demonstrate Tencent’s ongoing efforts to deepen the integration of artificial intelligence with payment systems. Following the introduction of its enterprise-focused AI product WorkBuddy, incorporating payment capabilities is expected to enable agents to transition from handling information and coordinating tasks to directly processing transactions, thereby creating a more comprehensive service framework.
The “Payment + AI” sector has seen significant growth recently. On June 16, Alipay launched its own AI-powered version of the Abao product. Meanwhile, other companies such as UnionPay Business and JD.com are also actively developing similar features. As leading platforms join this space, AI-driven payments are moving steadily from conceptual testing toward actual product deployment.
Nevertheless, industry experts emphasize that the current stage of “Payment + AI” development is still in its infancy. At this phase, tasks such as product recommendations, order placement, and payment processing primarily rely on natural language interactions, with users remaining in control of critical decision-making and authorization processes. In the future, as AI agents gain greater capabilities for autonomous planning and execution, they may be able to handle the entire process—from searching and comparing prices to making purchases and completing payments—within user-set boundaries, thus evolving these agents from simple auxiliary tools into fully capable digital assistants.
From an industry development standpoint, payment functions are emerging as a vital infrastructure component for AI agent ecosystems. As platforms like Tencent and Alipay continue to invest heavily in this area, competition focused on enabling AI agents to perform autonomous transactions and task execution is likely to become a key driver in the commercialization of artificial intelligence applications.
