As the next phase of rapid large model deployment draws near, internet giants are reshaping their R&D structures in an unprecedented "de-laboratory" transformation.
On March 20, an internal restructuring notice from Tencent sent ripples through the industry: the nearly ten-year-old Tencent AI Lab has been officially dissolved, and its research capabilities will be folded into the overall large model system. This shift means that the AI Lab, once a group-level basic research unit, is leaving the era of "independent exploration" and will now fully support the iteration and application of the Hunyuan large model .
R&D Focus: The Hunyuan Team Becomes the Central Hub
According to the latest restructuring, key members of the former AI Lab have been moved to the Large Language Model Department, reporting to Tencent's Chief AI Scientist Yao Shunyu. A Princeton Ph.D. and former OpenAI researcher, Yao Shunyu now oversees both AI Infra (Infrastructure) and the Large Language Model, making him the organizational core of Tencent's AI strategy.
This move tackles Tencent's long-standing problem of fragmented R&D. Previously, AI capabilities were scattered across various business groups, leading to high coordination costs. With this consolidation, Tencent aims to create a tight feedback loop among research, engineering, and product development.
Hunyuan 3.0 Stabilized? Full Public Testing Starts in April
The immediate outcome of the restructuring is the upcoming launch of Hunyuan 3.0. During a recent earnings call, Tencent executives disclosed that Hunyuan 3.0 is currently being tested internally for business use and is slated for official release in April. The new version promises major advances in reasoning capabilities and Agent (intelligent entity) development.

ByteDance: Its former AI Lab has been merged into the Seed team, adopting a rapid iteration model akin to OpenAI's approach.
