Tencent quietly shifts AI focus from Yuanbao to WorkBuddy

In the fiercely competitive AI landscape, Tencent's AI strategy is clearly shifting. WorkBuddy, its AI agent designed for workplace productivity, is emerging as the central pillar of Tencent's AI efforts, while the once-highly-anticipated "Yuanbao" has taken a back seat.
WorkBuddy's rise is no accident. Launched in early 2026, it directly tackles the pain points of non-technical professionals. Its key strength is an exceptionally low barrier to entry—users can instruct AI to handle complex tasks with just a simple sentence. This streamlined approach has quickly won over users, making it a "dark horse" among domestic productivity tools.
The data tells the story most clearly. In March this year, WorkBuddy recorded an impressive 8.85 million monthly visits, with month-over-month growth skyrocketing 831%, and it outpaced the runner-up by a factor of two. After the official App launch on May 23, its download ranking jumped from outside the top 300 to inside the top 100 in just three days, and it has since settled comfortably in the top 60.
To stay ahead, Tencent is pouring resources into frequent updates. According to the Tencent Cloud AI Industry Application Conference on June 5, the personal version of WorkBuddy underwent 43 updates in just three months. It is now considered the top priority product within Tencent's "Hunyuan" model series strategy.
Tencent is steadily expanding WorkBuddy's ecosystem. The product has recently been testing WeChat Pay integration and has also linked to Tencent's own stock-picking expert center, with the goal of embedding AI deeply into users' financial and daily office workflows via full-scenario coverage. These moves make it clear that Tencent has positioned WorkBuddy as a key AI application hub, and is moving fast in the productivity tools space.
