Teenager Leverages AI for Ransomware Attack That Forces Major Platform to Cease Operations Fully

Recently, the Tokyo Police Department resolved a significant cyberattack case, resulting in the arrest of a 15-year-old freshman high school student from Sōtō City in Saitama Prefecture on charges related to cybercrime. This incident has drawn considerable attention, not only due to the suspect’s young age but also because he employed generative AI tools to carry out the entire attack sequence.
Further investigation uncovered that the teenager accessed Bandai Namco’s animation streaming service, BANDAI CHANNEL, using someone else’s account in November 2025. After gaining unauthorized access to the system, he developed malicious software designed to delete 46,812 member accounts across the platform. The sheer volume of affected accounts forced the service provider to suspend all operations temporarily.
Throughout the attack, the teenager not only wiped out user accounts but also stole substantial amounts of sensitive personal data, such as email addresses and usernames belonging to the victims. However, preliminary findings indicate that the stolen information has not yet been utilized for any additional illegal activities.
Under police interrogation, the teenager admitted to all the criminal acts. Interestingly, he clarified that he did not carry out the attack out of dissatisfaction with the platform’s operators. Instead, it appears he viewed the operation as a way to test his technical capabilities. According to investigators, he began exploring computers in the fourth grade of elementary school and has spent years self-studying related technologies, eventually channeling that knowledge in an inappropriate manner.
To date, the Japanese authorities have not released specific details about the security vulnerability the teenager exploited to infiltrate the system. This incident serves as another reminder of the critical importance of cybersecurity, highlighting how generative AI technology may lower the barriers to launching cyberattacks. As AI tools become increasingly widespread, finding effective ways to defend against these new types of threats has emerged as an urgent challenge for internet companies.
