On June 16, Bloomberg reported that SpaceX has finalized a merger agreement with Anysphere, the developer of the AI programming tool Cursor. Under the terms, Cursor's existing common and preferred shareholders will exchange their shares for SpaceX Class A common stock, based on Cursor's implied equity valuation of roughly $6 billion. The all-stock transaction involves no cash and is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
Cursor has rapidly emerged as one of the fastest-growing AI programming products. It enables developers to write, debug, and optimize code using natural language commands powered by large language models. As generative AI becomes deeply integrated into software development, the "Vibe Coding" approach—where developers rely on chatbot prompts—continues to gain popularity. Cursor stands out as a key product in this trend and has been widely adopted by developers.
The acquisition marks a strategic move by SpaceX and its founder Elon Musk to bolster AI software capabilities.
