SpaceX Buys $329M in Tesla Megapacks This Year

SpaceX has significantly increased its acquisition of Tesla Megapack units, investing $295 million during the second quarter and $329 million year-to-date, as detailed in the company’s earnings report published on Tuesday.
This move highlights the deep integration within Elon Musk’s corporate ecosystem. As CEO and primary shareholder of SpaceX, Musk also leads Tesla. Furthermore, his artificial intelligence venture, xAI, acquired his social media platform, X, in 2025, and earlier this year, SpaceX absorbed xAI.
These large-scale batteries are likely intended for SpaceX’s xAI data centers. Prior to the merger, xAI had already purchased $430 million worth of Megapacks for its facilities. In contrast, xAI’s first-quarter purchases amounted to just $34 million. Additionally, SpaceX’s regulatory filings indicate that as of December 2025, it had acquired $131 million worth of Tesla Cybertrucks at the manufacturer’s suggested retail price.
While xAI relies heavily on natural gas for data center power—including dozens of unpermitted turbines near the Colossus project in Mississippi—large battery systems like the Megapack remain essential.
Beyond offering rapid backup power within a second, these batteries supply additional energy to GPUs during peak demand. AI data centers experience fluctuating power usage rather than consistent consumption, as demand varies with AI model training and inference tasks.
Such power spikes can trigger substantial utility fees or overload on-site generators. Batteries mitigate these peaks, reducing costs and ensuring stable data center operations.
