Sony, Warner Sue Anthropic Over Alleged Massive AI Copyright Infringement

Sony and Warner Music Group have initiated a landmark copyright lawsuit against AI firm Anthropic, alleging massive unauthorized use of copyrighted music for training the Claude model series. The complaint highlights Anthropic’s failure to secure licensing rights, marking one of the most significant IP disputes in tech history.
The lawsuit details how Anthropic, led by founders Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann, allegedly bypassed legal channels to amass training data. Reports indicate Mann downloaded over 5 million pirated books via BitTorrent, while other staff accessed millions of unauthorized e-books from Pirate Library Mirror. Furthermore, the team scraped lyrics from sites like MusixMatch and LyricFind, ignoring existing licensing agreements with record labels.
Plaintiffs are seeking statutory damages of up to $150,000 per infringed work, plus an additional $25,000 for each instance of willful copyright removal. Legal analysts warn that with millions of works involved, potential liabilities could reach billions if the court rules in favor of the music giants.
This case underscores the growing legal risks for AI developers. As content creators enforce stricter IP protections, ensuring lawful data sourcing has become a critical compliance hurdle for the commercial viability of AI companies.
