Sony officially clarified the public attention around the "AI Camera Assistant" feature showcased on the Xperia 1 III, detailing the logic behind this AI-powered function. The company explained that the AI Camera Assistant is not an image editing or generation tool but a system built on edge-side visual perception, offering shooting optimization suggestions based on real-time lighting, depth of field, and subject characteristics. When users point the lens at a target, the system intelligently provides four optimization options covering exposure, color, and background blur adjustments.
However, the gap between the feature's promotion and actual user experience has stirred industry debate. Sony claimed in its product video that the assistant could recommend the "best photo angle," but the demo showed only zoom-in suggestions, which is conceptually different from recommendations involving spatial angles.
Moreover, the optimization examples Sony shared on May 14 and subsequent posts on X fell short of expectations. While they avoided the severe color distortion and overexposure issues present in earlier versions, the grid examples still faced criticism for being overly saturated, flat, and showing noticeable processing artifacts.
Currently, the smartphone industry is rapidly integrating generative AI with traditional computational photography to enhance the average user's photography experience through multimodal understanding.
