SoftBank Expands $40 Billion OpenAI Equity Loan with 21 New Lenders

According to industry insiders, the $4 billion bridge loan arranged by SoftBank for its equity stake in OpenAI has moved into a major distribution phase. Twenty-one new financial institutions have joined the syndicate, collectively securing approximately $7 billion in commitments. Abu Dhabi First Bank, Singapore’s Government Investment Corporation, and Standard Chartered each assumed nearly $1 billion, while the balance was distributed among various European, Japanese, and Taiwanese banks. The remaining $33 billion of the facility remains with the lead underwriters and core senior lenders, with potential for further distribution in the future.
Structured as a 12-month facility, the loan was finalized in March and ranks among the largest bridge financing deals in Asia-Pacific history. Underwriters stand to earn over $100 million in fees from the transaction. Prior to the open distribution in May, nine banks had already participated. While some institutions have expressed concerns regarding risk exposure from SoftBank’s investment in OpenAI, all parties involved have declined to comment publicly.
