SoftBank Closes $1B OpenAI Investment, Plans Another $1B in October

SoftBank Group, through its SoftBank Vision Fund 2, has finalized a $10 billion second tranche investment in OpenAI. To fund this commitment, SoftBank secured a $10 billion transitional loan from external lenders, as outlined in the agreement signed earlier.
This move fulfills part of SoftBank’s broader $30 billion additional investment strategy, executed in three stages. The final $10 billion tranche is scheduled for completion by October 1 this year.
Masayoshi Son’s Vision for AI
Prior to this phased rollout, SoftBank’s Vision Fund contributed $500 million to OpenAI in 2024, marking their initial major capital partnership. As the driving force behind the Vision Fund, SoftBank Group Chairman and CEO Masayoshi Son has consistently championed aggressive investments in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
