Science Corp Taps Leading Neurobiologist to Launch First Human Trials of Biohybrid Brain-Computer Interface
Science Corporation, a brain-computer interface (BCI) startup co-founded by Neuralink’s Max Hodak, has appointed Dr. Murat Günel, chairman of neurosurgery at Yale School of Medicine, as a scientific advisor. Dr. Günel will lead the company’s first U.S. human clinical trial for its biologically hybrid BCI system, marking a strategic shift from purely electronic devices to integrated biological-electronic solutions.

Founded in 2021 with a $1.5 billion valuation, Science Corporation recently closed a $230 million Series C funding round. The company’s core innovation avoids the brain damage risks associated with traditional rigid metal probes. Led by Chief Scientific Officer Alan Mardinly, the team is developing a biologically hybrid sensor that incorporates lab-grown neurons. This device uses light pulses to stimulate neurons, aiming for natural integration with the patient’s neural circuits rather than relying solely on electrical intervention.
The initial human trial will evaluate a micro-sensor equipped with 520 recording electrodes. Unlike Neuralink’s invasive implants, this sensor will be placed on the cerebral cortex surface within the skull, utilizing miniaturization to minimize risk. Dr. Günel plans to conduct preliminary validation on patients undergoing craniotomy, with future applications targeting Parkinson’s disease, post-stroke rehabilitation, and brain tumor monitoring.
While the company’s PRIMA vision restoration device is scheduled for promotion in Europe this year, this advanced biologically hybrid system requires extensive preparation for human trials. Dr. Günel noted that although a 2027 trial start date may be ambitious, the system holds the potential to halt neurodegenerative diseases, offering a new paradigm for human enhancement and medical treatment.
