SAP and Fresenius Forge Sovereign AI Platform for Healthcare
SAP and Fresenius are collaborating to establish a sovereign AI platform for healthcare, designed to bring secure data processing directly into clinical environments.
For data leaders in the medical sector, implementing AI demands rigorous governance, which is often lacking in public cloud solutions. This partnership directly addresses that gap by creating a controlled environment where AI models can operate without compromising data sovereignty.
Moving AI from Pilot to Production
The initiative aims to build an open, integrated ecosystem that enables hospitals to utilize AI securely. Instead of conducting isolated experiments, the companies are developing a digital backbone to support a sovereign, AI-enhanced healthcare system.
Michael Sen, CEO of Fresenius, stated: “Together with SAP, we can accelerate the digital transformation of the German and European healthcare systems and deliver a sovereign European solution, which is critically important in today's global landscape.
“We are creating secure, simple, and scalable data and AI tools for everyday use by doctors and hospital teams. This allows more focus on what truly matters: patient care.”
The technical foundation utilizes SAP Business AI and the SAP Business Technology Platform. By leveraging these components, the platform establishes a compliant, sovereign base for operating AI models in healthcare. This infrastructure ensures the responsible handling of health data, a fundamental requirement for scaling automated processes in patient care.
The collaboration tackles data fragmentation through SAP’s “AnyEMR” strategy, which facilitates the integration of diverse hospital information systems (HIS). Using open industry standards like HL7 FHIR, the platform connects HIS, electronic medical records (EMRs), and other medical applications.
This connectivity enables Fresenius to develop AI-supported solutions that enhance efficiency across the entire care continuum. The objective is to build an individualized, scalable platform that powers connected, data-driven healthcare processes.
Investing in Sovereign AI to Advance Healthcare
Both companies plan to invest a mid-three-digit million euro amount in the medium term. These funds are targeted at the digital transformation of German and European healthcare systems through AI-supported solutions.
Plans include joint investments in startups and scaleups, alongside internal technological development. This strategy aims to build a broader suite of tools that integrate with the sovereign platform.
