According to a recent Wall Street Journal report, OpenAI is set to officially shut down its video generation app, Sora, in April this year, with API support ending in September. This move marks the end for Sora, a once globally sensational video model, which has become a casualty in the company's strategic shift due to high operational costs and commercialization hurdles.
Sora initially drew roughly 1 million users with its realistic output, but engagement quickly halved and stagnated. Daily active users fell to around 500,000 with no recovery in sight. The project also faced significant financial and reputational strain: Sora reportedly incurs about $1 million in daily operational losses, while copyright disputes and low-quality user-generated content are seen as damaging to OpenAI's brand. Confronted with these high costs, OpenAI has canceled plans to train a new video model.
The competitive landscape also played a role. The rise of rivals like Anthropic prompted OpenAI to reassess its resource allocation. With limited computing power, the company decided to concentrate on products with greater long-term commercial potential, such as coding tools, enterprise services, and agent-based AI. The original Sora team's R&D focus has now shifted to the "robot world model" domain, aiming for breakthroughs in areas with stronger economic prospects.
Sora's discontinuation highlights a broader shift in the AI industry from an early "technology showcase" phase to a focus on "efficiency first." Even an AI product with groundbreaking visual capabilities cannot survive the market if it fails to balance compute costs, copyright compliance, and commercial returns.
