OpenAI Seeks Android Default Status for ChatGPT in Search
On March 23, OpenAI formally applied to the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to have ChatGPT included as a selectable default search engine option for Google's Android system and Chrome browser. This step represents a significant move by AI-native applications to challenge traditional search gateways.
Under the CMA's rules for the open search market, Google is required to offer users a "choice screen" to select their preferred default search service. In its application, OpenAI argued that as consumers increasingly seek information through conversational and multimodal interactions, AI chatbots with web search capabilities are effectively functioning as search engines. OpenAI proposed that the eligibility criteria should be updated to include AI platforms offering a "generative search experience," moving beyond traditional index-based engines like Bing.

ChatGPT currently boasts 900 million weekly active users. While users can manually change the search engine in Chrome via extensions, it lacks a native, system-level option. With Google deeply integrating its AI Overviews feature into search results, OpenAI contends that ChatGPT deserves fair market access as a comparable alternative.
If approved, this application would disrupt the long-standing dominance of Google and conventional search engines at critical traffic entry points. It signals the formal arrival of generative AI from third-party apps to the foundational operating system interface. This shift is poised to reshape the mobile search landscape and could pressure regulators to modernize the definition of "search services" for the digital age, potentially accelerating the fragmentation of the global search market.
